A contractor has been appointed to build the M&S and Aldi stores on the outskirts of Whitby, with construction expected to start next month.
Plans for the two supermarkets were granted by the borough council in December and the developers are now hoping to begin work on the site in May.
The boost to the Whitby shopping scene will see the introduction of a 16,000 sq ft M&S Foodhall and a 16,920 sq ft ALDI, along with a large dedicated customer car park on the site adjacent to Homebase.
A spokesman for developers, Lateral Whitby said: "Since the Planning Committee on 7th December 2017, we have agreed the Section 106 Agreement with Scarborough Borough Council and the Planning Permission was formally issued on 2nd February 2018.
"Following this, we have made significant progress on detailed design and discharge of pre-commencement planning conditions. A contractor has now been appointed and we hope to start construction in May 2018."
