Work on Whitby swing bridge has been halted today (Tuesday) due to high winds.
It means that the planned closure to pedestrians and vehicles has now been extended until 6am on Thursday.
The bridge was due to re-open tomorrow (Wednesday) after electrical upgrades to the control system but the county council said that working conditions had become too dangerous.
Cllr Don Mackenzie said: “We are sorry for the stoppage of the swing bridge works today, but the safety of our workforce must be a priority.
“We will of course continue with the work as soon as it is safe to do so and our contractors are working around the clock to complete the work. However, the stoppage means the bridge must remain closed for an extra day until Thursday.
“We are sorry for any disruption caused by this extended closure but the workforce cannot be working on the bridge when the winds are so strong.”
