Not only is he a successful cricketer, in his youth he played football at semi-professional level for Whitby Town in the Northern Premier League and had football trials with Manchester City.

Lyth, 28, has been playing cricket from an early age. He captained Yorkshire under 15s in 2003 and made his first-team debut for Yorkshire in 2006.

In the 2008 season, he won the Yorkshire CCC Young Player of the Year award and in 2010 he was awarded his county cap at the North Marine Road Ground in Scarborough.

At a County Championship match against Leicestershire in 2012, Lyth created a county record by becoming the first Yorkshire batsman to score over 200 runs, while carrying his bat through an entire innings.

The former Caedmon College Whitby student also totalled a first-class career best of 248 not out.

In 2014, he was named Yorkshire’s Player of the Year, winning similar awards from the PCA and the Cricket Writers’ Club.

He made his Test debut for England against New Zealand in May 2015 where he scored his first Test run off the first ball of the game and went on to be selected as England’s opener for the 2015 Ashes series against Australia.

Cllr Phillip Trumper, who has been the driving force behind the Whitby Town Council-organised festival, said: “We are delighted that Yorkshire’s finest cricketer is supporting us by switching on the Christmas Lights and opening our festival along with the winner of the Mayoral Christmas Card competition, Airy Hill School pupil

Mabel Witney.”

On Friday November 18, a community lantern parade, co-ordinated by Professional Puppeteers Animated Objects Theatre Company, will process from the Pannett Art Gallery to the Marina Car Park, arriving in the town centre at 6.30pm.

The Christmas lights switch-on then officially opens the market,to be immediately followed by a spectacular fireworks display.

This event offers a packed programme including live music, Christmas market, fairground rides and Santa and his sleigh.
