The family-owned and run company, based at Fairfield Way on Whitby Business Park, was one of 10 finalists in the category – and won as it received the most online votes from the public.
Sales manager Will Crooks attended the ceremony with his guest, Raymond Fusco of Whitby fish and chip restaurant Quayside.
A delighted Will told the Whitby Gazette: “It’s nice that general members of the public are vouching for us and it makes a big difference.
“When you think Whitby used to be a fishing hub, it’s nice to bring a national award back.”
Will said he didn’t know anything about the awards until the organisers got in touch out of the blue to say they were one of the finalists – and winning it outright certainly came as a pleasant surprise.
“We were sitting there for a second in disbelief but then jumped up and cheered,” he said.
“We were over the moon.
“There was some big firms there and we thought there was no chance. When they announced us as winners, I was blown away by it.
“The first person I rang was Dennis, my dad, who was at home. He was really proud and ecstatic about it.
“It should hopefully give our business a bit of a boost.”
The company’s victory at the Food Awards continues an excellent year.
A Marine Stewardship Council-certified sustainable seafood supplier, Dennis Crooks Fish Merchants won the MSC Special Achievement award this year.
