A Whitby chimney sweep is brushed with success after scooping a national award.

Tony Gissing and his wife Enid, have beat competitors to win the Van of the Year Award, for the fourth time.

They fought off 11 other national companies to win the accolade, which merits the standards of the van itself and the tools inside it.

The couple, who run the only professional chimney sweep business in the area, picked up the title for their company’s van, along with a shield and a voucher for £100, at Sutton Coldfield at a two day event last week (15/16 April).

Members of the National Association of Chimney Sweeps, Mr and Mrs Gissing first picked up the award in 1997, winning a voucher and a tankard.

Mr Gissing said: “We are proud to bring the award back to Whitby. We take pride in our work. We have been in the business for over 30 years now.”

The NACS has nearly 400 members nationwide and holds a two day trade show every year, where the van of the year is chosen.

Mrs Gissing who works alongside her husband added: “People who go to the show get forms to fill out so that they can vote for who wins over the two days.”

The Gissing’s van, complete with a chimney sweep brush on the roof is widely recognised around Whitby.
