On Valentine’s Day, 1980, Brian Johnston brought his ‘Down Your Way’ radio programme to Whitby.

Johnston is pictured above interviewing Bill Fortune of Fortune’s Kippers at their Henrietta Street smokehouse.

He was interested in finding out more about how the family-run business produced their famous Whitby cured kippers.

‘Down Your Way’ ran from December 1946 until 1992, originally on the Home Service before moving to BBC Radio 4, and was usually broadcast on Sunday afternoons.

It visited towns around the country interviewed local residents.

Johnston, who was better known as a cricket commentator, presented the programme from 1972 until 1987.
