Locker Trawlers and Parkol of Whitby launch a partnership to build a new vessel in Whitby next year.

The company stormed to victory, claiming 47 per cent of all public votes in the category for its work building the Guardian Angell LK272, a Shetland-based whitefish trawler.

Whitby saw further success in the awards, with James Locker of Lockers Fish claiming the Demersal Fisherman of the Year title.

While now sailing out of the fishing port of Peterhead, Lockers Fish is still primarily based in Whitby and supplies acclaimed fish restaurant The Magpie Café.

The Magpie itself was nominated for Coastal Fish Restaurant of the year.

Category winners were decided by public vote.

James Locker said: “Demersal Fisherman was such a strong category, I was pleased to be nominated and shortlisted let alone win.

“I first went to sea at the age of eight back in 1988 and have built my career in a dramatically changing and challenging industry.

“It is great to be celebrating achievements within the industry and I would like to thank everyone who voted as the support which I have received is brilliant.”

Lockers Trawlers managing director, Arnold Locker, said: “It is fantastic that three family-run businesses from Whitby achieved a position on the shortlist for these three categories; that is an achievement in itself.

“To then continue to win is fantastic. James Locker won Young fisherman of the year back in 2006 and to go onto win Demersal Fisherman of the year 10 years later is a great acknowledgment of the determination which both James and Locker’s Trawlers have to succeed in an ever changing industry.”

Following the awards, which took place at a ceremony in Aberdeen, Lockers Trawlers and Parkol Marine ventured into another new partnership, signing to build a new vessel to launch in 2017.

The pair have launched four new vessels together to date. The companies’ first vessel launched back in 1999.

Mr Locker, said: “This is a very exciting time for bothbusinesses, celebrating 17 years of working together as we venture into another partnership.

“The vessel will launch in 2017 and will be designed to both pair and single trawl out of Peterhead.

“Investing in new vessels is essential to the Locker Trawlers and Locker Fish mission of delivering fresh fish to our customers.

“It means our customers can gain confidence that we are providing the best quality product sustainably with continuous investment into technology, health and safety and vessel equipment.”

The Fishing News awards were hosted by Sunday Brunch co-presenter Simon Rimmer. Simon is a professional chef and restaurateur, and is chef patron of two award-winning restaurants in Manchester.
