Whitby’s first major event of the summer calendar gets under way next weekend as the Goths return to town.
The first Whitby Goth weekend of the year takes place between Friday April 22 and Sunday April 24 with several thousands set to visit town.
What started over 20 years ago in the Elsinore as a meeting of friends who enjoyed a particular genre of music has now developed into arguably the world’s biggest event of its kind.
And from that many types of ‘Goth’ have emerged, from punks, steampunk, emos, to bikers, metallers and those who enjoy an alternative lifestyle.
And Whitby is ready to welcome them all with many visitors enjoying the laid-back, non-judgemental atmosphere and approach that the town has to offer. The Goths come to enjoy the music, dancing, shopping and catching up with old friends and making new ones.
The event, held twice a year with a bigger weekend taking place in the Autumn, is set to be a major money spinner for Whitby’s pubs, cafes and shops with hotels and guest houses often getting booked up a year in advance.
In addition to the music line- up, there is a Bazaar Alternative Market spread over various areas in the town from the Spa Pavilion, Whitby Leisure Centre, and at Whitby Brunswick Centre.
