Whitby football round-up: Fishermen net quarter-final clash against rivals Lealholm
Whitby Fishermans Society booked an intriguing Scarborough Junior Cup quarter final with neighbours Lealholm after thumping fellow NRFL side Lingdale Village 6-0.
Lingdale started the better, but Fishermans went in front after 20 minutes when a smart move was finished by Dan Brown.
The hosts then added three quick goals, first a cross from Phil Spencer that was deflected in, Karl Storr and James Armstrong then completed the first-half scoring.
Mark Jones’ men added two more, after the break through a 30-yard pile driver from Jord Purvis and a well-worked team goal rounded off by Armstrong.
Fishburn Park brushed aside Redcar Newmarket 6-1 in the North Riding County FA Saturday Cup.
Craig Skelton notched for Newmarket, while their Whitby visitors were boosted by Dan Brown’s treble.
Sam Richardson, Joe Crowther and Callum Halley also found the net.
Staithes Athletic edged out Stokesley Sports Club 2-1 in the North Riding Football League Premier Division.
Sports Club felt they were denied two clear penalties.
Ryan Leslie scored for Sports Club, but Athletic squeezed home at 2-1 thanks to strikes from Joe Butters and Connor Hood.
Lealholm beat Sinnington 2-1 in an-all Beckett League first division clash in the Ryedale Hospital Cup.
A first goal of the season for Lewis Tillotson after 21 minutes put the Sinners ahead when he lobbed the home keeper Tobi Fergus.
On 30 minutes Lealholm were back level when Mark McCarthy fired in from 15 yards for a well-worked goal.
Lealholm’s winning goal didn’t arrive until the 87th minute when Josh Hodgson crossed the ball from the left wing for McCarthy to score to put his team into the quarter-finals.
Man of the match was left winger Hodgson.
Sleights beat Snainton Reserves 4-0 to progress.
Sam Leadley and Ed Turner’s men finished worthy 4-0 winners with goals scored by Chris Shrimpton, Billy Graham, 16-year-old Elliott Hewison and Charlie Smith, who was a second-half substitute.
Man of the match for Sleights was shared by Adam Entwistle and Graham.
Seamer Reserves moved level on 18 points with West Pier Reserves and Goldsborough United in fifth spot of the Scarborough & District Saturday League Division Two standings after a 2-0 win on the road at Fishburn Park Reserves.
Jordan Glendinning fired in Seamer’s opener early on, before a late goal from Danny Kelly wrapped things up.
Paul Tose impressed for hosts Park.
Fylingdales battled back from 2-0 down to beat Newlands 7-2 in Division One of the Scarborough & District Sunday League.
Newlands led 2-0 but hosts Fylingdales had other ideas and roared back into the game, with doubles from Jimmy Landers and Si Forde, plus strikes from Dave Welham, Sam Richardson and Adam Crookes sealing a superb 7-2 win.
Neil Purves was the Dales man of the match.
