Whitby area yacht clubs to host try sailing days
Whitby Yacht Club and Scaling Dam will be throwing open their doors, encouraging all-comers to try sailing as part of a national Push the Boat Out campaign by the Royal Yachting Association.
They will be among a dozen sailing clubs across Yorkshire inviting local people to join them on the water in May.
Sailing kit and safety equipment is provided and no experience is needed – you just need a pair of old trainers you don’t mind getting wet and your sense of fun.
New research by the RYA shows that a quarter of people have never tried an outdoor pursuit, yet two in four want to be more active and nearly a third want to get more fresh air.
Sam Usher, RYA Regional Development Officer for the North East, said: “So many people still don’t realise how easy it can be to get into sailing and windsurfing, and that you don’t even need to own a boat or board as clubs and centres have ones you can borrow or hire.
“Once you’ve learned the ropes, you can sail on your own or with your partner, friends or kids in dinghies or big boats, inland or on the coast.
“And after you’ve given your mind and body an on-the-water workout, nothing beats having a drink by the water on warm summer evenings.”
Thousands of people across the North East regularly go along to their local sailing club, taking out boats or windsurfers on the region’s reservoirs, lakes, rivers and coastline.
RYA Director of Sport Development, Alistair Dickson said: “If you’re looking for something completely different to do with the family, a workout in the fresh air or perhaps to get back out on the water after having a break, then pop down to your local sailing club or centre during May and ‘Push the Boat Out’.”
The local dates for Push the Boat Out days are: Scaling Dam Sailing Club, Sunday May 13 and Whitby Yacht Club: Monday May 28.
