Winter is barely out of the way but a Whitby community initiative is already planning a three-day festive fair.
The We Are Whitby group is planning for the Winterfest to take place at the Pavilion over the first weekend of December.
It will feature a large number of local businesses, as well as social, cultural, faith and community groups, to highlight what organisers are calling “the power of community at Christmas”.
An open meeting to progress the plans and get more people involved is taking place on Wednesday at the Rifle Club from 7.15pm.
In addition to the opportunity to kickstart Christmas shopping with local traders there will be events and activities showcasing local community groups too, from faith, art and education sectors.
James Fearnley, chairman of We Are Whitby, said: “The Winterfest will be an exciting opportunity to showcase all that is good about Whitby.
“We would like to bring together as many individuals, small businesses and representatives of all parts of the Whitby community as possible to help us plan this exciting idea.
“Winterfest will provide not only the opportunity to shop locally for Christmas, but have activities, entertainment and information on the incredible variety of local groups and initiatives in the area.
“We hope the initial meeting will generate loads of enthusiasm from all parts of the community to get involved in the planning, fundraising and managing of the festival.”
At next week’s meeting there will also be a drive to promote the We Are Whitby initiative and encourage more local businesses, organisations and individuals to become members. The We Are Whitby brand has been kickstarted again by Mr Fearnley after a break from town activities.
After a successful Christmas market in 2014 it was put on the back burner due to time and work commitments.
Members and what they offer will be listed on the website and entitled to take part in events with stickers and certificates issued which show they are part of a recognised local organisation.
