The Environment Agency last night issued a warning that flooding was expected around the Whitby harbour area between 4am and 5.15am due to strong winds caused by Storm Ciara and large waves due to high astronomical tides.

The coast from Staithes down to Filey, along with the River Esk catchment, was on alert.

Although the water was extremely high at this morning's high tide, flooding in Whitby failed to materialise.

The next high tide is at 4.49pm today.

Yesterday, Whitby Abbey grounds were closed to the public due to strong winds while Dalby Forest was also closed.
