A NEW scheme has been launched in Whitby to fight the cold and tackle fuel poverty.
Scarborough Borough Council has teamed up with Yorkshire Energy Partnership to offer free home insulation to residents of Whitby, Filey and Scarborough.
The Wrapping Up Yorkshire scheme, which launched this week, is a new move to tackle fuel poverty and to keep the cold at bay through the freezing winter months.
Householders can now get free loft and cavity wall insulation in their homes, on a first-come first-served basis.
The scheme is open to all private homeowners, including landlords and is funded by national energy providers.
It is the first free to all insulation scheme set up in the area and a lot of interest is expected.
Coun Bill Chatt, cabinet member with responsibility for housing and property maintenance, warmly welcomes this initiative.
He said: “Insulating your home is the best way to keep your home warmer in winter and is the best way to keep your fuel bills down.”
According to the Energy Saving Trust, roof and insulation can help householders save up to £310 per year on their energy bills.
Mr Chatt added: “We hope this offer will be snapped up by anyone still living in a home without cavity wall insulation or with inadequate loft insulation.”
