Views from the Pews: Shaping the course of your future

We all have a past, present and a future. We also have made, are making and will make choices that shape all three of these categories.

A family day out with the Hope Youth Project. The group runs on Mondays at Eastside Community Centre, 4pm. All are welcome to join in.

This is where the ace bit comes in. I get to combine two of my favourite subjects - Jesus and football (more specifically, Middlesbrough).

In 1995 Boro signed Juninho for a record club fee of £4.75 million (that was a lot 23 years ago). Juninho was the Brazilian footballer of the year and he came to Middlesbrough. Why?

Middlesbrough is not exactly Sao Paulo is it. We had never won anything. I will tell you why.

Bryan Robson was our manager, he was undoubtedly one of the all-time greats in English football, probably one of the greatest footballers in the world in the 80s. He had a past that people admired.

Boro at the time had a brand new stadium and Steve Gibson (our chairman) was willing to invest in Bryan. That was the present.

Bryan Robson sold a future to Juninho that he would be the first of many super stars (and he was). Only months later came Fabrizio Ravanelli, Emmerson and so on. That was the future.

We’ve not long celebrated Easter. The time when Jesus came and He dealt with the past of the Old Testament by fulfilling the prophecies in it. He dealt with the people at the time (the present) in that place. He showed them God’s love. On the cross He dealt with the future. All sins, past, present and future were taken care of there and then. That from that moment on in time, “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved” Roman 10:13.

What’s your past? What do you have to deal with? Maybe it is hurt or maybe it is actually good times that you have let slip away. What are you dealing with in the present? Something that needs change or something that needs to be done? What does your future look like? If you changed the above two, what could it look like?

The God of the bible is the beginning and the end. He is the creator and He will have the last say. We need to make that commitment to Him alone. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

Jesus has changed my life dramatically. Over 10 years ago, I gave Him my past, He changed my present by healing me and He gave me a future that I am now living out.
