The 18-year-old Whitby man who was killed in a head-on car smash on the moors road last night has been named as Dan Rollins of Westbourne Road.
The fatal collision occurred at around 6.45pm on the A171 near Ugthorpe and Mr Rollins, who was driving a Seat car, was pronounced dead at the scene.
A 60-year-old woman from the local area, who was driving a Vauxhall Corsa, remains in James Cook Hospital, Middlesbrough with serious injuries.
Mum Sue Rollins, who said her son was known as ‘Dollins’ by friends, added that his family are all devasted by his death.
She added: “He was definitely a wild child but he would do anything for anybody.”
The collision happened at around 6.45pm on the A171 Whitby to Guisborough road, near the Ugthorpe turn off.
Traffic Sergeant Neale Rees, of the Road Policing Group, said: “This is a very serious collision and I am appealing for witnesses to come forward as a matter of urgency.”
Police say the incident involved Mr Rollins’ Seat car going towards Whitby, and two other cars, a Vauxhall and a Ford, heading in the direction of Cleveland.
The woman in the Ford escaped with minor injuries after she collided with the rear of the Vauxhall and took evasive action.
Paramedics and fire crews assisted at the scene and casualties were taken by ambulance to hospital.
The road reopened at 3am this morning.
Sgt Rees added: “We also need to hear from anyone who was travelling on the A171 Whitby to Guisborough road from around 6pm up to the time of the crash at 6.45pm on Tuesday.
“If you can recall seeing any of the vehicles involved in the build up to the collision, please get in touch.”
