A FIRE at Whitby Business Park caused the area to be evacuated and the A171 Whitby to Scarborough road to be closed overnight on Wednesday for fears of a potential explosion.
Arsonists are believed to have set fire to a pile of tyres at Whitby Tyre and Exhaust Centre in Enterprise Way.
The blaze then spread to the main building, where highly-flammable acetylene canisters were housed.
Fire crews responded to reports at 9.15pm and a 200 metre exclusion zone was imposed, meaning nearby businesses on the estate were evacuated.
Acetylene is used in welding and can explode violently when exposed to high temperatures.
Employees from surrounding business, including Whitby Seafoods and Bothams, were not allowed onto the estate until fire officials declared the area safe at 10am yesterday.
Fire crews from Whitby, Robin Hood’s Bay, Lythe and Scarborough attended the scene.
