TRAFFIC UPDATE: Snow causes delays on roads in and around Whitby and Scarborough

Yorkshire Coast roads are struggling to cope with the wintry conditions as heavy snow falls across much of Scarborough and Whitby.

The AA is reporting that the A171 Scalby Road between Burniston (Jolly Sailors roundabout) and Scarborough is just passable due to snow, while North Yorkshire Police have asked motorists to avoid the A171 at Cloughton Bank due to a Road Traffic Collision.

The AA website states: Road blocked and queueing traffic due to crash on A171 Ringing Keld Hill both ways between Newlands Road and Gowland Lane. Sensors are now showing that the road is blocked in both directions.

The AA is also reporting delays of three minutes on A171 West Lane Eastbound between A171 and Little Moor Close and delays of two minutes on A171 Scalby Road Eastbound between Scalby Beck Road and Sycamore Park. Average speed ten mph.

There are also severe delays on the A171 in Whitby. The AA are reporting delays of 12 minutes on A171 Helredale Road Eastbound between B1416 Stakesby Road and Helredale Road Average speed five mph.

On the A170 near Ebberston severe delays of 17 minutes on A170 High Street Westbound between A170 and Main Street. Average speed ten mph.

On the A170 at Wykeham there are severe delays of 21 minutes and delays easing on A170 Eastbound between Lairs Lane and Main Street. Average speed five mph.

At Sleights, the A169 is just passable due to snow on A169 Coach Road both ways from A171 Guisborough Road to Eskdaleside.

The A174 between Lythe and Sandsend is just passable both ways due to snow on Lythe Bank. At Staithes the A174 is just passable both ways due to snow from B1366 Station Road to Dalehouse Bank.
