FOR the first time ever, this year Santa Claus is coming to Whitby, with the assistance of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.

Santa and his helpers will be on the railway throughout December, – and the Whitby Gazette has free tickets for a family of four to win a trip on the Santa Special on 11 December at 3pm.

The Santa Specials will also be leaving from Grosmont and Pickering, but Father Christmas will not be the only special guest on the railway this year.

Five-year-old Charlie Hook suffers from an aggressive form of childhood cancer and will be meeting Santa in his grotto on Saturday at 11.30am on the service leaving from Grosmont Station.

Charlie was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma on his fifth birthday in January. Although he his undergoing treatment in the UK, his family have launched the £300,000 Charlie Hook Appeal to raise money for treatment abroad if he relapses.

NYMR general manager Phillip Benham said: “We will be doing all we can to make this day special for Charlie and his family and we will be helping the appeal with collections throughout the day.”

Santa Specials depart from Whitby on 4 and 11 December and from Grosmont on 3, 10, 17, 18, 19 and 20 December. Fares are £13.50 for both adult and child tickets, this includes a trip on the train to meet Santa in his grotto, a hot drink and a mince pie to warm the cockles.

Children will also receive a quality present while adults will be able to enjoy a complementary tipple.
