The closure of Ruswarp High Street while repairs to gas mains are carried out is already causing chaos.
Work got underway on Monday but local businesses say trade is already suffering and residents say they are grid-locked
It is set to be closed to traffic for a month because large sections of the road are being dug up and it is not wide enough to allow vehicles to pass through.
They are instead being diverted via Danger Bank and Golden Grove or motorists are having to travel into town via the A171 where traffic is already at a standstill due temporary traffic lights while the park and ride is being constructed.
Cromerty York of Brook Park, Briggswath said it took ten minutes to get from the top of Carr Hill Lane past Cross Butts when it normally takes two.
She added: “With the number of visitors too, the tail backs coming off the moors are really quite far back.
“My daughter wanted something else after we had been to town but no way was I going to be in a traffic jam all that time.”
Susan Chilton, landlady at The Bridge said: “They closed the road at 4pm on Sunday and didn’t start until Monday.
“We went really quiet. People are just going elsewhere. Even the walkers aren’t coming into the village. I can’t afford to lose the business at this time of year.”
