A PARK and ride scheme in Whitby which was shelved last year due to funding cuts is back on the agenda.
North Yorkshire County Council (NYCC) is making a bid for £10 million worth of funding from the Department of Transport.
If it is given the go-ahead it would fund the scheme in Whitby and a similar one in Harrogate.
NYCC says proposals are still being developed but it is thought the package will focus on better and easier travel, improving and promoting public transport and other alternatives to private cars.
It is also likely to include different ways of letting day visitors to Scarborough know when there is congestion on the main roads to encourage them to stagger their journeys.
The decision to pursue the Whitby scheme, which was put on the backburner in July while the coalition government undertook its Comprehensive Spending Review, was made following discussions between national parks, district councils and voluntary organisations.
If the bid for funding is successful it is thought work will start next year and is expected to be finished by 2015.
