A VOLUNTEER with the North Yorkshire Moors Railway has been found dead on the line at Grosmont after a collision with a steam train this afternoon.
Police were alerted to the scene by the Yorkshire Ambulance Service at around 12.20pm today (Monday).
The middle-aged man, who has not yet been named officially, was pronounced dead at the scene.
An investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death has been taken over by British Transport Police who are being assisted by North Yorkshire Police.
The line is expected to be closed for the rest of the day while investigations take place but the trains on the Esk Valley line are unaffected.
An eye-witness said: “All I know is there has been an accident and there has been a fatality.
“It is dreadful and so sad for the family, it is not nice but I really don’t know any more.”
