A WHITBY vessel had a close call on Friday when it began to take on water after suffering engine failure.
At around 2pm the small vessel Heartbeat, with six crew members on board, alerted Humber Coastguard to the fact it was sinking and stranded a few miles off Whitby.
An RAF search and rescue helicopter was the first on the scene and was able to ensure everyone was safe, lowering a winchman onto the vessel.
The Sea Ranger and Copious arrived on scene to assist but it was Whitby’s all-weather lifeboat that was able to take on board the stranded crew and transfer a pump onto the stricken vessel.
The pump was used to remove any water on board and the boat was then secured and towed back into Whitby harbour.
