This year Captain Cook’s most famous vessel celebrates its 250th birthday, and the modern-day captain of its replica has celebrated the occasion with the help of the Gazette.
The HM Bark Endeavour was launched from Fishburn shipyards in Whitby in 1764 and Christened the Earl of Pembroke, although it would keep the name for just four years.
Its replica is berthed at the Australian National Maritime Museum in Sydney.
The vessel is captained by John Dikkenberg, who said: “We are excited to be celebrating HMB Endeavour’s 250th birthday. Greetings to all our friends in Whitby from Sydney, Australia.”
