Fashionable flares prompt rescue search

A FIREWORKS enthusiast releasing “flares” led to a search and rescue mission by Whitby’s lifeboat and coastguard teams on Saturday.

Just after 10pm on Saturday 9 July the coastguard service received a number of reports of a red flare being fired out to sea, and search and rescue teams were quickly scrambled to the Saltwick Bay area of Whitby.

Upon arrival they discovered a member of the public who had fired what he described as a “special red firework”.

The gentleman was not in any danger.

A coastguard spokesperson said: “People firing red fireworks or Chinese lanterns from the beach or cliff should first inform the police and coastguard to avoid this sort of incident.”
