Both of Whitby’s lifeboats were in action this weekend.

On Saturday afternoon the inshore lifeboat, the OEM Stone III, was requested to assist lifeguards at Sandsend when a small dinghy had capsized.

When the crew arrived on scene they found the occupants had made their way to shore safely and were all accounted for.

On Sunday at around 6.55pm, the all weather boat, the George and Mary Webb was tasked, along with the inshore vessel to a yacht in distress.

The 14 metre sailing vessel, Julia, has four crew members on board and was drifting towards Whitby rock.

A crewman from the inshore boat was placed on the yacht and helped to connect a tow line to the all-weather boat.

A drogue was also attached to the yacht to steady the tow and Julia was brought back into the harbour and moored alongside the fish quay before the lifeboats returned to base.
