He was spotted in Whitby during the filming of The Grand Tour in mid October and his latest review reveals that he dined out in town with Jimmy Carr, who was involved in the filming.

In a review for The Sunday Times, Mr Gill praised the restaurant, awarding it five stars for both food and atmosphere.

He is a big fan of the establishment, having proclaimed it as offering “the best fish and chips in the world” in a review published almost a decade ago.

And his opinion hasn’t changed, with his latest review adding: “This is, all things considered, without pretension but with utter self-confidence, still the best fish and chips in the world”.

Mr Gill opted for haddock and chips while Jimmy Carr opted for the cod.

He said: “We decided to judge, once and for all, the ancient north-south question of haddock or cod. And, as a Scot, I’m happy to say my national preference for haddock won by a slim, opalescent flake.”

AA Gill’s Magpie review also sadly opened with the news that he has cancer which he described as “an embarrassment of cancer, the full English”.

He added: “There is barely a morsel of offal not included. I have a trucker’s gut-buster, gimpy, malevolent, meaty malignancy.”

The 62-year-old father of four also announced that he plans to marry his partner of 23 years, Nicola Formby.
