Thousands watch cyclists cross Scarborough finish line

Spectators in Scarborough roared as loud as the crashing waves as the Tour de Yorkshire cyclists crossed the seafront finish line.

Stage One came to a spectacular close in North Bay as winner Lars-Petter Nordhaug of Norway stormed home.

Thousands of people cheered, whistled and hammered against security barriers creating a wall of noise as the riders flooded into Royal Albert Drive.

Nordhaug was presented with his Stage One jersey by Scarborough’s mayor Pat Marsburg and North Yorkshire County Council’s vice chairman David Jeffels.

Cllr Jeffels said: “The turnout of the crowd along the whole route has been amazing.

“The publicity for Scarborough from this event is priceless and it’s a wonderful curtain-up to the summer season.”
