Strong winds nearly scupper fishing boat rescue

The town’s all weather life-boat was called upon to see that a fishing boat tow landed safely back in Whitby Harbour.

Crews were paged at 7.55am on Saturday morning to assist local fishing trawler, Copious, which was towing Celestial dawn back to port.

Copious was making good progress with the tow but became concerned when strong westerly winds blew the stricken boat towards the east pier as it came into the harbour.

The lifeboat passed a line to the stern of Celestial Dawn and acted as a brake in what is known as a Tail End Charlie but it was decided to let Copious carry on with the tow.

All three vessels entered the harbour at 9am and proceeded up to Parkol Marine where Celestial Dawn was docked alongside Eskside Wharf for repairs.

Whitby lifeboat then returned back to station and made ready for service.
