Staithes Group work to feature '¨in spring art sale
More than 20 Staithes Group works are expeced to attract great interest in a spring art sale next Friday.
The spring art sale at the Vine Street salerooms in Scarborough features 300 lots across two sections – a more traditional view (19th and early 20th Century) and a contemporary view.
Among the items of interest are lot 55, Dame Laura Knight of Staithes Group:Tempora Mutantur (Times are Changing) - Reflections of a Staithes Fisherman, watercolour signed Laura Johnson. It is an early and unusual picture, painted before she was married, due to fetch between £1,000 and £1,500.
A watercolour by Mary Weatherill (British 1834-1913): The Harbour and East Cliff Whitby looking towards the Abbey, is one of four pieces by the artist. Work by William Henderson and George Chambers junior and senior can be seen.
The sale also features a collection of sketches of old Whitby – among them, a collection of pen and watercolour sketches by Albert Thomas Pile (1882-1981) – Miller’s Yard, Haggersgate, Doorways Old Whitby. Most of these buildings were demolished during rejuvenation works in the 1960s.
Each sketch is annotated titled and dated 1960/61 with a precise time of execution.
They are expected to fetch between £200 and £300.
The sale is next Friday at 11am. You can view the work on Tuesday and Wednesday from 10am to 4pm, Thursday 10am to 7pm and Friday 8.30am to 11am.
