A new toilet and shower block facility is set to be built on Church Street - with a pop up cinema on top.

It is a venture being led by Whitby Town Council who for years have been discussing replacing the old toilets that used to be near The Fleece pub and were knocked down around ten years ago.

They have been able to progess the idea thanks to funding they have raised from within the town council budget as well as grants from a government coastal scheme.

Cllr Phil Trumper from the harbour board told the Gazette: “The architects came up with a plan which we liked so we have approved the concept and if everything gets passed they will get the contract.”

The new building will be on the same spot as the old toilets.

But it is set to take up a larger footprint, will have toilets for the public and showers with anglers and harbour users in mind.

There will be space on top of the single storey building to have a cinema screen, a stage allowing for live music and concerts or simply storage if needed.

Cllr Trumper added: “There was nothing other than toilets on the west side but the boats go off from there and the east side really needed a harbour facility.

“The top space could be used for a number of roles.

“Storage of bags or sails or it could be opened up for events, put seating in the car park and have a group or a pop up cinema .

“About six years ago the town council wanted some toilets in Church Street to replace the ones that had been knocked down but there was no chance of getting any funding.

“When the town council set up the harbour committee four years ago it delegated the idea of building a toilet facility but we still needed the funding.”

At its last full council meeting the authority backed the proposal which will now be put to the borough council to seek planning permission.

It is hoped that will be approved later this year and meetings with the Leeds based architecht can continue to progress and finalise the designs in terms of colour, interior and the materials to be used .”
