Whitby’s villages were transformed into a winter wonderland this week as snow fell across the district.
Whitby fared slightly better in the weather stakes with a light covering of snow falling in town on Wednesday.
But roads leading out of Whitby to Scarborough, Guisborough and Pickering were blocked on Wednesday for a time after snow fell, making the routes impassable while Birk Brow shut in both directions after a lorry jack-knifed.
In town, at the corner of Green Lane and Church Street, two cars were involved in a collision which saw one driver taken to hospital for treatment just before 12.30pm.
Later on Wednesday afternoon, children were sent home from Whitby Community College early as the weather worsened.
Bin collections were also disrupted as a result of the snowfall which has been particularly bad in Goathland and villages on the moors including Danby and Castleton.
The council said it anticipates all scheduled collections will be made in urban areas, but there will be a number of rural properties in outlying areas, which collection crews will not be able to reach and they will catch up as soon as they are able to.
