THERE have been some spookier than usual goings on at Whitby Abbey this week.
Staff planning a half-term time travel event for young visitors were aghast to discover that a skeleton had been snatched from a stone coffin - and hasn’t been seen since.
It is thought the character gave staff the slip some time last weekend.
Lesley Brice, historic property steward, told the Gazette: “We are still doing the trail with the rest of the characters, we are just saying you might not find that particular one. But if it comes back let us know and there will be an amnesty.
“Somebody has removed it from the sarcophagus, known locally as the stone coffin. We put various characters out during the summer and they were left out. But the skeleton is an obvious choice to be taken with it being Hallowe’en and Goth weekend.”
