An Eskdale schoolboy was found dead at his home in a village near Whitby on Tuesday afternoon.
The 13-year-old has been named as Jamie Dobie, of Houlsyke near Lealholm.
Police were called by the ambulance service at around 5.50pm on Tuesday, following the death of the Eskdale school pupil.
Sue Whelan, head teacher at Eskdale School, said: “Jamie was a lovely young man and a popular member of our school community.
“We are all shocked and saddened by this tragic event. Our thoughts are with his family.”
Paramedics from Yorkshire Air Ambulance also attended the scene.
Police do not believe there are any suspicious circumstances surrounding Jamies death and a coroner’s report is being prepared.
A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police said his family are receiving support from specially-trained officers at this very distressing time.
The spokesperson added that the boy’s family was “understandably distraught” following the tragic incident and added: “We ask that no speculation is made as to the circumstances of his death.
“Please respect his family’s privacy as they try to come to terms with this terrible tragedy.”
