Scarborough comes to a standstill

Scarborough roared home the riders in the first ever Tour de Yorkshire.

People turned out in their hundreds in the town centre, filling every possible vantage point.

The riders were well spaced out by the time they reached the heart of Scarborough but the crowds shouted encouragement like they were all winners.

Tony Bell had brought his six-year-old daughter Kat along to watch as the peloton made its way past the Rotunda Museum.

He said: “It’s a little bit of history isn’t it?

“Seemed daft not come along and watch. Plus the sun is shining which always helps.”

Pupils from Gladstone Road School waved banners as the cyclists went by and people crowded along the grass verges, hoping to snap the perfect picture.
