Two years of hard work culminated in Whitby’s ‘comfiest’ show recently.
The Queen Bee Quilters host a show every two years, displaying their handiwork and raising money for local charities.
This year’s show took place at Whitby Pavilion with the theme set as ‘Trip Around the World’.
For the first time the Jane Steiner Memorial Cup was presented in memory of one of the Queen Bee Quilter’s founder members.
Jane passed away last year and her family attended the show, picking a Jane Snoxell’s quilt as the winner because it was the one they thought their mother would want to take home.
Quilter Julia Sillitoe said: “Jane was a dear friend, a gifted crafts person and a prolific and talented quilter over 25 years.
“Her passion for patchwork and quilting was inspirational and she gave her time and knowledge freely to all, especially the youngsters whom she encouraged with kindness and enthusiasm.”
Julia added how Jane would attend many day workshops, and having made an item she would immediately rush home to make two or three more of the same project.
She added: “Jane was always the last one to leave a venue if we had been on a quilting trip and she used to say that she had so much she wanted to do, but there wasn’t enough time.
“Therefore Jane was always busy working at her many different projects.”
The members of the Queen Bees take two years to put together their show and are usually also members of other quilting groups such as Thursday Stitchers, Seaside Stitchers, Creative Stitchers, Heather Quilters or Ammonite Quilters.
Prior to the exhibition, man of the quilts were on display in shops areound Whitby.
The Best Use of Colour Cup was won by Elizabeth Stuart with her quilt ‘Flower Box Garden’.
The Visitors’ Choice Crystal Bowl was won by Liz Pretherick with her quilt ‘Whitework Sampler’, voted for by people attended the quilt show.
Liz also won the Queen Bee Challenge Plaque with the interpretation in the ‘Trip Around the World’ challenge, voted for by people attending the show.
Prizes were also awarded by the show traders for their personal choice of quilt.
The Raffle Quilt was won by Brenda Bazter of York who won the ‘Trip Around the World’ patchwork quilt, made by members of Queen Bees.
