A pooch had a lucky escape after being dragged down the river Esk for around a mile and plunged into Whitby harbour.

The dog, called Lucy, had fallen into the river near the Larpool viaduct and was unable to get out, as the current dragged her downstream, under the new bridge and into the harbour.

Coastguards rushed to the scene after the owner raised the alarm. Upon arrival, they found that a member of the public had managed to rescue the dog using their boat.
