Scarborough and North Yorkshire County Council are asking people to delay house clear outs, DIY and gardening projects that could create waste they can’t dispose of.

Despite household waste recycling centres being temporarily shut, there has not been a significant increase in rubbish being dumped.

But people are being asked to do what they can to maintain that.

Harry Briggs, Scarborough Borough Council’s Deputy Operations, Transport and Countryside Manager, urged people to keep the amount of waste they produce as low as they can and ensure their bins are out in time so that they can continue to deliver their usual bin collection service.

“Remember to only buy enough food for your household and make sure you use it wisely to prevent it being thrown away,” he said.

“Home compost if you can and recycle as much as possible via your blue bin.

“If you would normally carry out a ‘spring clean’ or clear out at this time year, please postpone it until the county council’s household waste recycling centres re-open.”

Ian Fielding, Assistant Director of Waste Management at North Yorkshire County Council, added: “Fly-tipping is never acceptable.

“Our household waste recycling centres are temporarily closed to protect the public and our staff, and to cut non-essential travel in support of the Government’s Stay Home Save Lives drive.

“We have asked people to support this by delaying any gardening or DIY projects that could create waste they can’t dispose of.”

He warned people to be careful is they employed a contractor to take away rubbish and be wary of offers to take waste aware at a significantly lower price, cash-only transactions or where a contractor only be found through social media.

The county council has compiled advice to help people reduce waste on its website.

Bulky items can be collected for a fee by the borough council’s partner RB Recycling by visiting www.rbrecycling.co.uk or calling 01723 582589.
