The footbridge, which weighs 9 tonnes and is 27 metres long, was escorted to Whitby on the back of a low loader lorry.

On arrival at Endeavour Wharf car park, it was craned from the lorry onto the side of the harbour, where it will remain until plans for installing it are finalised and weather and sea conditions for the complex operation are favourable.

the way to the end of the pier extension, a walk that hasn’t been possible since the previous footbridge was removed on safety grounds in 2001.

The footbridge was constructed by Lochshell Engineering in Wick, Scotland, before being transported to Peterhead for surface treatments.

It has been funded by the Marine Management Organisation’s (MMO) European Maritime Fisheries Fund (EMFF), Scarborough Borough Council and Whitby Town Council.
