300 new homes on way to Broomfield Farm, Whitby, as council approves plan

Property firm Keyland Developments will transform the 23-acre site at Broomfield Farm into a housing development in a move that could create 800 jobs during the building process.

Scarborough Council’s planning committee today (Thurs) voted to approve for the hybrid application.

The vacant site covered by the application sits close to Stainsacre Lane – between Whitby and Scarborough, Eskdale Park and Whitby Business Park.

The greenfield land is located next to Yorkshire Water’s operational sewage treatment works. Keyland Developments is a sister company of Yorkshire Water.

A number of councillors raised concerns that they hoped that odours from the sewage plant would be addressed before people moved into the homes but ultimately the committee backed the scheme unanimously.

Whitby Cllr Phil Trumper said: “It’s not a perfect development but it is going to provide much-needed housing.”

The application will see 30% of the homes classed as affordable.

Whitby Town Council had objected to the plans as it feared the site was too close to the sewage plant saying it was an “inappropriate development”.

The new development will “cater for different housing providers” Keyland says, including “self and custom build, community land trust housing, later living housing, small to medium-sized housebuilders and volume housing builders”.
