Police crash investigation

A police force is set to carry out its own internal investigation into the course of events leading up to the death of a Whitby man in a horror car smash between Ruswarp and Briggswath.

Gary Powell (21) died at the scene on The Carrs early in the morning of Tuesday 30 April after the car he was driving left the road and hit a tree before landing on its roof.

In the hours leading up to the incident he had contact Cleveland Police following in an incident in Middlesbrough, where he was originally from, before he returned to the Whitby area.

The matter was referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) but after carrying out an investigation it ruled the Cleveland force can investigate the incident itself and a spokesperson added the investigation is already underway.

Mr Powell was a fisherman and lived at Rosedale Close in Whitby with his partner of three years Ginny Worrall who said he was “the life and soul”.
