Work on new council housing in Bridlington starts this month

East Riding of Yorkshire Council has appointed contractors to build new apartments in the town and work will begin very soon.

A new two-storey building housing six one-bedroom flats will be built on an area of unused land near to the junction of Thornton Road and Bessingby Gate, on the West Hill estate.

As well as the three ground-floor and three first-floor properties, there will be off-street parking, a cycle store and a refuse store as part of the development.

Planning permission for the project was granted earlier this year and the building work will be carried out by Geo. Houlton and Sons. It is part of a programme that East Riding of Yorkshire Council is delivering thanks to grant funding from Homes England.

Mike Raven, principal project manager at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “Despite the challenges of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, which has affected the construction sector particularly severely, we’re pleased to be able to get this scheme awarded to contractors who will be moving on site shortly.”

The new apartments are due to be completed by spring 2021. In the past, the site has been used as a storage and clothes drying area.

Councillor Mike Stathers, portfolio holder for enhancing communities at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “Providing new affordable housing will revitalise this site and help to improve the surrounding area.

“There is always a demand for one-bedroom properties for couples and single people, so this project is a welcome addition to our housing stock in Bridlington.”
