Whitby’s Penny Hedge gathers discarded cans to raise funds for James Cook Hospital

Earlier this year staff at a Whitby pub put their best foot forward to raise money for charity.

A group of them started the Penny Hedge Trash for Cash initiative and began collecting aluminium cans for recycling to raise money.

General manager Scott Prett said: “Since we started back in January we have posted on our Facebook page and got the local community along with Whitby Sea foods saving their cans for us and dropping them off at the pub.

“When we go out for our daily exercise we take our bags and litter picker and collect cans on route – you would be surprised how many cans you can collect on a five mile walk.”

“We’ve also been joined by people in Skelton, Guisborough , Stockton-on-Tees and Middlesbrough.

“We take them to Prossers’s scrap dealers in Middlesbrough who trade them for cash, cans are then sent to India.

“”All money collected is donated to The James Cook Hospital Heart Scanner Ward.”

“To date we have collected a massive 275kg and raised a fantastic £82.35. As an average 440ml can weighs 22g you can see that is a lot of cans collected.”

The Penny Hedge currently has contractors working on site in preparation for re-opening and Scott says they look forward to welcoming guests back on May 17.
