Whitby's east pier extension footbridge craned into position
A new footbridge, constructed specifically to link Whitby’s East Pier to its pier extension, was craned into position in the early hours of Sunday.
Final work, associated with the installation, is now being carried out and once finished, the footbridge will be opened to allow people to walk all the way to the end of the pier extension, a walk that hasn’t been possible since the previous footbridge was removed on safety grounds in 2001.
The footbridge, which weighs 9 tonnes and is 27 metres long, was constructed by Lochshell Engineering in Wick, Scotland, before being transported to Peterhead for surface treatments and delivered to Whitby in November.
It has been funded by the Marine Management Organisation’s (MMO) European Maritime Fisheries Fund (EMFF), Scarborough Borough Council and Whitby Town Council.
