Next year is the 200th birthday of Whitby Museum – and a year-long exhibition opening in February will tell the story of the development of the museum through the display of many of the artefacts which have been collected over the years.

In 200 Years of Collecting, the exhibition will show how and why the collections have changed over the last 20 decades.

An integral part of the exhibition will be the screening of a documentary film which the museum has commissioned.

Filming recently took place in The Old Town Hall in Whitby where the founding meeting took place on January 17, 1823, of the Whitby Literary and Philosophical Society, and subsequently the Whitby Museum.

Actors and extras in period costume were filmed reconstructing that initial meeting.

Filming has also taken place at Caedmon College where students have selected their own chosen artefacts for the 2020 decade.

During the next two months, filming will be taking place in Whitby and behind the scenes at the museum involving the staff and the curators.
