Whitby artist Phoebe gets biggest break yet at London Fashion Week

Her collaboration with fashion boutique Browns saw her collection of 12 faux leather sculptures on display in their Shoreditch and South Molton Street locations.

Former Whitby Community College student Phoebe (22) has recently graduated from the University of the Arts in London, where she received a degree in fine art and sculpture.

She is back in her homeland training to be a teacher at Eskdale School in Whitby – but it is a career in art in which she is desperate to succeed.

A delighted Phoebe said: “I studied fine art at UAL and it was there that I started making a lot of textile sculptures.

“Browns then got in touch with me following my degree show and that’s when I started collaborating with them for fashion week.

“Although this series of sculptures explores the female body, it is a celebration of everyone, of all shapes and sizes and an opportunity to reflect on society’s perceptions.”

She is quick to pay tribute to her colleagues and pupils at Eskdale School: “The school has been incredibly supportive of me as well as the students.”

Her latest work at Browns focuses on the ‘modern woman’ and society’s expectations of her, exploring the problems surrounding social media, diet culture, body positivity and the male gaze. Her work will be on display until March 16 in Browns East entrance in Shoreditch.
