There are four Scarborough facts per year. The photos don't relate to the stories, they are national images relating to that year, courtesy of Getty Images. That's with the exception of the one showing the raid on Potter Lane in Scarborough in 1940.
1. 1939
War was declared on 3 September. In early September evacuees arrived in Scarborough from Hull, Hartlepool and Middlesbrough; 18,000 evacuees were scheduled to come from Hull, only about 30% actually did so.
2. 1939
First prosecution for a blackout offence; a butcher in Newborough was fined 1 for having his shop window fully illuminated after 8.07pm on 9 September.
3. 1939
Scarborough's three electric air raid sirens were tested on a Sunday afternoon in December - but were too puny to be heard over the noise of the traffic.
4. 1939
Over 4,000 people came to Scarborough for the town's first wartime Christmas, which was unspoilt by any restrictions except blackouts.
