Two former Mayors of Scarborough borough die within days of each other

Mr Tindall had been a long-serving member of both the Scarborough authority and North Yorkshire County Council as well as being a member of the North York Moors National Park Authority for many years.

Borough Honorary Alderman Tindall, who was 86, served the Danby area in the Esk Valley near Whitby as a Conservative councillor, and was a prominent member of the valley's rural life.

He served as a parish councillor in the Danby group of villages and as a member of the jury and foreman of the historic Danby Court Leet.

His funeral service at St Hilda's Church, Danby, was packed with standing room only, and was followed by interment in the churchyard.

One of his main interests was the National Park where he particularly championed the safeguarding of its famous moorland sheep flocks, and the need for affordable homes for local people.

One of his granddaughters, Lynn Foster, said in a moving tribute: "His happiest years were spent farming at Head House, Danby. Farming was in his blood, he loved working the land."

She added: "But the thing he treasured most was his family."

He leaves his wife, Annie - the couple would have marked their diamond wedding next month - four children, Mike, Christine, Sue and Judy, 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Honorary Alderman Dr Jean Greenan represented the Scalby ward of Scarborough Council for many years, and was a prominent figure in the village's community with her late husband, Dr Joe Greenan.

She was a major figure in Scalby Village Trust, and other organisations, and served on all Scarborough Council's major committees, including the Policy and Resources Committee, and as chairman of the Development Services Committee.

She served as Mayor of the Borough in 1982-83.

Dr Greenan had been living in Richmond for some time.
