Support Scarborough: How you can play a part in helping our businesses

The call comes from the boss of Scarborough’s Brunswick Shopping Centre – and The Scarborough News is echoing the message with a new campaign, #SupportScarborough.

The new lockdown rules have forced all stores that are deemed “non-essential” to shut for at least the next four weeks.

The restrictions are a massive blow to retailers who are being made to shut up their shops for a sizeable chunk of their all-important pre-Christmas period.

Sue Anderson Brown, Manager of Scarborough’s Brunswick Shopping Centre, said: “This is the golden quarter – it’s the key, critical time for retail.”

Many shops are working to highlight and add to their online shopping services while also investing in new click and collect and telephone order capabilities.

In the Scarborough area, Lockdown 2 is a hammer blow, to our hospitality sector which supports so many local jobs, and to our independent retailers as well.

So today, as we enter this second lockdown, The Scarborough News is urging readers to support our local shops and businesses.

Visit their websites to purchase their goods online.

Add Scarborough to your online search and try to buy from a local supplier. Click on their products, and support their businesses.

Many will deliver, or will also be offering click and collect services.

Or simply wait until our local shops reopen.

We will publish details of local goods and services throughout November, in print and online, to highlight some of the great retailers, restaurants and cafes we are lucky to have.

For so many businesses, and especially in the vital run-up to Christmas, their survival is at a critical point.

Their future is in our hands, and together we can all make a difference.

The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) and British Independent Retailers Association (BIRA) back our initiative. FSB National Chairman Mike Cherry said: “Small businesses are well and truly at the heart of our communities. Over much of the past year, the valuable contribution these firms make to local areas has been proven time and time again.

“For many though, these past few months have been the most difficult small firms will ever face, and the winter ahead looks set to be a very difficult one, which is why it’s never been more important to support your local firms and, by extension, the community in which you live.”

BIRA Chief Executive Andrew Goodacre agrees. “Consumers must resist the lure of the big online retailers if these local shops are to continue to service the communities. Think local when it comes to shopping.”
