Scarborough Council to review its dog ban rules

Scarborough Council is consulting on its Dog Control Public Space Protection Order, which as well as restrictions on beaches also covers whether dogs have to be kept on leads on some green spaces, play parks and cemeteries.

The review of the order was last carried out three years ago when the council ended up carrying out two consultations following objections the boundary of the beach dog ban in Whitby.

In total, 1,249 people replied to the second consultation, compared to 314 for the first.

This made it the most responded to consultation ever carried out by the council.

The new consultation will run until August 28 and can be filled out online.

A council spokesman said: “The borough council’s Dog Warden Service responds to complaints and incidents primarily involving stray dogs.

“We also undertake enforcement of our public space protection order which details how and where dogs can be exercised.

“We try and strike a balance between dog owners and people who prefer stricter limits on the exercising of dogs.

“To try and achieve this consensus we consult periodically on our restrictions, we fully recognise the importance of dog ownership and try to provide plenty of areas for people to exercise their dogs on and off the lead.

“We do also understand that some people want to enjoy areas free from the presence of dogs.

“By taking part in this survey you can help shape our restrictions for the next three years.”

There are dog bans in place on the main sections of beach at Scarborough South Bay and North Bay, Whitby West Cliff and Tate Hill, Filey and Sandsend. The areas where dogs are not permitted will be clearly signposted at all beach access points.
