Sainsbury’s limit store entry to one adult per household as delivery slots increase

Sainsbury’s are, from today, allowing only one adult per household into their stores at any one time, enabling customers to stay further apart and reducing queues at the tills.

An email sent by the company’s Chief Executive, Mike Coupe, outlined further measures being introduced in stores to protect staff members.

These include social distancing markers throughout the store and the introduction of screens which are being installed at checkouts and Argos collection points.

Mr Coupe said that while product levels are returning to normal, and purchase limits for the majority of items will begin to be removed from Sunday, the most popular items including UHT milk, pasta and tinned tomatoes will be restricted for longer.

Limits on Easter eggs will be removed immediately as stocks are plentiful. Children are still welcome in store if they are unable to stay at home.

Mr Coupe said great effort had been made by the company to increase options for those in need.

Over 450,000 elderly and vulnerable people now have priority access to online delivery, he said: “We are expanding our groceries online service as much and as quickly as we can.

“Two weeks ago we had 370,000 online grocery slots available. By the end of next week we will have increased this to 600,000 across home delivery and click and collect and we will continue to add more capacity over the coming weeks.

“Our colleagues really are doing a remarkable job. I have been into a number of stores over the past few days and have been struck by their dedication and their determination to do the best job for our customers.

“Thank you for treating our colleagues with the respect and kindness they deserve. They really are doing their best to serve our customers well in these challenging times.”
